Who We Are
We are B. K. and Kim Parsley and we own and operate Broken P Farm in Afton, TN. My career brought us to east Tennessee in 2010. After getting settled, I wanted to get back into farming. We bought our current farm in Afton, TN (Greene County) and moved our cattle operation here from Smithville, TN. My father, Bill, joined us a year later and is a vital part of the day to day operation of the farm.
History
The Broken P brand was developed in the early 1990’s in Smithville, TN. My father had been a dairyman for 20 years but decided it was time to get out. As part of this transition, we started raising beef cattle. In developing a brand for our farm that would be hard to alter and include ties to our operation, he came up with the Broken P brand. When asked what his inspiration was, he told me the “P” came from our name (Parsley) and the “Broken” came from the fact that stuff was always broken around the farm and we usually did not have money to fix it. When we returned to farming after several years we decided to renew the brand registration. For us, it serves as a reminder to do the best we can with what we have in all aspects of the operation.
Our Cattle
Great beef starts with great cattle. We utilize Akaushi (brown wagyu) and black angus cattle to make great beef. Akaushi is one of the four breeds considered wagyu in Japan. They are known for good marbling ability and easier fleshing which allows the beef to be produced with fewer inputs. Black angus form the basis of our traditional heard. Angus cattle have long been known for their flavor and marbling. They also make great momma cows.
